Chanukah is a holiday that celebrates the victory of a small band of freedom fighters over a despotic ruler in Jerusalem. The 8 candles represent a legendary miracle when the ruined temple was rededicated. Although there was only enough consecrated oil to last one day, it is purported to have lasted 8 days until new consecrated oil could be obtained. But more important, the lights of the chanukah menorah represent the strength of faith and the illumination of freedom. During modern times many Jews celebrating this holiday give prayers for the peoples of the world who are suffering from oppression. |
